MMU Version 2.0 Installation Procedure for 2 Boards SuperPETs ------------------------------------------------------------ Getting Started: **** DISCONNECT THE POWER CORD **** ---------------- 1.0 The MMU unit should be enclosed together with the two software disks. Verify that the packaging is marked with "2B", for a TWO BOARDS SUPERPET, and ensure that all the parts are included as listed in the parts list below. 2.0 Open the box and remove the disks and the MMU board carefully. 3.0 Separate the double (40 pins) sockets from the back board. 4.0 Separate the single (20 pins) socket from the back of the board. 5.0 Open the computer enclosure, by unscrewing the two screws on both sides of the SuperPET's keyboard. 6.0 Lift the computer's case carefully, in order to clearly expose the top board. 7.0 With the aid of a screwdriver, gently remove connectors J1,J2,J3 and J4 (if connected). The above connectors attach to the select switches (on right), power line (at rear-left) and a flat ribbon cable (at the rear of the SuperPET). 8.0 Unscrew the four mounting screws, that hold the top board in place, then remove the TOP BOARD carfully. 9.0 ******************************************************************* * IF YOU HAVE NO SOLDERING EXPERIENCE, LET AN EXPERT DO THIS STEP * ******************************************************************* De-solder the chip labled U36 (74LS273), or ask an expert technician to do it, and resolder the 20 pin socket provided in its place. Before proceeding any further, you are advised to inspect the MMU board and all the parts enclosed, and ensure that nothing is missing (See parts list). Once you are convinced that the MMU kit is complete, check the position of jumper J2 against figure 2.0, also verify that connector P3, as seen in figure 1.0 is properly aligned above the letter 'A' on the MMU board. Any differences that you may have discovered and could not resolve may be an indication that your board is faulty, or you were shipped an MMU board suitable for the 3 board SuperPET. Mounting: --------- 1.0 Use a small screwdriver, or a chip remover, to gently remove the CPU unit from the SuperPET top board. The CPU is the 40 pin logic unit that is mounted in socket U13 and has the marking MC6809E on its case. 2.0 Plug the 40 pin socket, S1 provided, in place of the CPU U13 on the SuperPET board (see figure 2.0). 3.0 Plug the 40 pin socket, S2 provided, into the S1 socket just mounted (see figure 2.0). 4.0 Inspect the "tower" you have built for obvious flaws like bent or broken IC pins. 5.0 Plug the flat ribbon connector (if not already connected) to the MMU board at connector P3 A. Ensure that it matches figure 3.0 exactly !!! The provided ribbon connector is made up of 16 pins only, whereas the SuperPET socket (U36) and the corresponding one on the MMU board (P3 A) have 20 holes. Therefore care must be taken when installing the connectors. The extra pin attached to the flat ribbon cable should connect at pin position 11, and the rest of the lines attached to the DIP (Dual In Line Package) should symmetrically plug into the 20 pin socket leaving the first and last double rows exposed (see figure 3.0). 6.0 Gently insert the CPU unit, which you have removed from U13, into the MMU board (U6), aligned with the rest of the chips. 7.0 Inspect the CPU unit for obvious flaws, like bent or broken pins and improper alignment with respect to the rest of the logic chips on the MMU board. All round or square notches on the backs of the chips must point in the same direction. 8.0 Insert the MMU board into the 40 pin socket (S2) mounted on the SuperPET board in step 3.0, by carefully aligning the MMU board with the S2 socket and exerting a mild even force on the CPU unit. The MMU board should snap into place. 9.0 Plug the end of the ribbon connector into U36 socket on the SuperPET board as illustrated in figure 2.0 and 3.0. Ensure that the red line on the edge of the ribbon cable is on the same side of the IC sockets (P3,U36) and the single pin that is connected to the ribbon cable is plugged into pin positions 11 on both boards. 10.0 Inspect all the connections you have made. If all seems right, proceed with the reassembly of the SuperPET by mounting the top board back and reconnecting the three cables (J1,J2,J3).
